Ginseng has been used in Asian medicine for perhaps 5000 years. Wild American ginseng was apparently used by many Indian tribes for increasing the fertility of women, as a tonic to increase mental powers, and to treat headache, cramps, fevers, rheuma...

Similar to Asian ginseng, toal ginsenosides accounts for 5%~10% of the dried weight of American ginseng, however, its composition of ginsenosides differs largely from those in Asian ginseng, resulting into differnet pharmacological actions.

Major pharmacological activities of American ginseng are listed as follows:

  1. Cardiovascular system: a. improve myocardial performance and its resistance to ischemia; b. anti-arrhythmia; c. anti-shock; d. anti-atherosclerosis.
  2. Physical performance: a. anti-anoxia; b. anti-fatigue; c. increase endurance towards coldness and hotness; d. anti-thirst and anti-starvation.
  3. Stimulate hematopoiesis (blood production through bone marrow)
